January 23 - Pink Floyd’s Animals album was released on this day in 1977.
Loosely (very loosely) based on George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the album is a critique of the social-political conditions in the UK in the late ’70s, with lyrics about three classes: predatory businessmen in Dogs, the powerful and wealthy Pigs (Three Different Ones), and the mindless obedient Sheep. The songs Dogs and Sheep originated from two songs that Pink Floyd had introduced on their 1974 tours (along with Shine On You Crazy Diamond, which unlike these two was committed to vinyl on the next album Wish You Were Here): You Gotta Be Crazy and Raving and Drooling respectively. Recordings of these prototypes from 1974 concerts were officially released as part of the “Experience” and “Immersion” editions of WYWH in 2011.
